Durabestos — The Ideal Material for Walls, Ceilings and Roofs

URABESTOS is a modern building material, composed of asbestos-fibre and Portland cement. During the process of manufacture, the tough, imperishable asbestos fibres are thoroughly incorporated with the cement, with the result that a strong, firm product is obtained; rock-like in nature, and resembling trowelled cement in density, smoothness and finish.

The material is available in the form of Sheets of various sizes and thicknesses. In addition, we manufacture Durabestos Roofing Shingles, particulars of which appear on pages 12 and 13.

In its most frequent application, Durabestos fulfils the purpose of a Wall Lining for wood-frame structures. As a rule, Sheets of a nominal thickness of 3-i6ths of an inch are employed. Convenient in size and easy to handle and fix, these Sheets simplify Wall construction to a remarkable degree. Added to this are advantages in cost, for prices are very moderate, and painting may be eliminated. But of still greater importance is the permanence of Durabestos. Exposed to the weather, to fierce summer heat or the hail and storms of winter, Durabestos Building Sheets remain unimpaired. Unlike some of the less modern wall-materials, they cannot flake, craze, burn or perish.

Durabestos Sheets will be found ideal for both External and Internal Walls. In addition, plain Ceiling treatments may be carried out with thinner Sheets, of a nominal thickness of 5-32 ads of an inch.

Throughout this catalogue, we describe a id illustrate some of the everyday uses of Durabestos. Ample evidence is provided of the results that may be expected from the use of the material. But clients will do well to remember that only by avoiding substitutes can they achieve similar results. Wunderlich Durabestos is a standard material, made by a scientific and perfected process at our Australian Works, and rendered uniform in density, strength and finish by our exclusive method of hydraulically-compressing the Sheets. Do not be deceived, therefore, by similarity or imitation of appearance—insistence on Durabestos will ensure complete satisfaction, with a superior product.

CODE WORDS : Clients using the above code words, when telegraphing an order, should firstly mention the quantity—then give the code word for the thickness and size required.

Durabestos Sheets, approximately 3-l6ths of an Inch Thick, are Ideal for Walls and Gables.

INEXPENSIVE yet distinctly charming effects, typical of the picturesque half-timber treatments of mediaeval days, may be produced by panelling, with wooden cover strips of suitable size, the exposed surface of the Durabestos walling. Mansion and cottage alike may be improved by the use of Durabestos. The above illustration of an elaborate Home, with

upper walls and gables of Durabestos, is evidence of the artistic merits of our material.

Utilised after the manner illustrated, Durabestos offers many advantages. It is lighter in weight than less modern materials available for the purpose, and is fire-resisting, vermin proof, easily handled and erected, yet immune from such fallings as rotting, twisting, warping or disintegration.

Durabestos Sheets are singularly appropriate for structures in remote localities. Transport charges are extremely moderate because large quantities of the Sheets will nest closely and compactly into a case of moderate depth.

Substantial, Attractive Exterior Walls are Built Inexpensively of 3-16th Inch Durabestos.

DURABESTOS for external walls is supplied in the form of tough, rock like Sheets, approx, j-i6ths of an inch thick ; and in sizes ranging from 4ft. to 10ft. long, by' 3ft. and 4ft. widths. As our illustration shows, these sheets, while perfectly weather proof, produce an artistic, distinctive effect, far superior to the appearance of old fashioned materials such as weatherboards or corrugated iron. The sheets are light in weight, one square yard weighing only 16 lbs. One face of the sheets is of an even smoothness, and it is customary to expose this face when fixing Durabestos.

Painting Not Necessary: As the sheets are guaranteed to be perfectly weatherproof, and as the natural, pleasing bluish-grey colour is so agreeable to the eye, many users of Durabestos do not trouble to paint it. Think of the saving arising from this cause alone !

Improves with Age : Exposure to the weather only tends to improve Durabestos, rendering it tougher and harder as time goes on. It is unaffected by any sudden climatic change.

Un-harmed by Sea Air : Unlike most walling materials, Durabestos is not harmed by the salt air from the sea.

Walls of 3-16th Inch Durabestos Sheets can be Built Quickly, and will give Lasting Service.

CONSIDER the many important advantages arising from the use of Wunderlich Durabestos Sheets for External Walls. So many stock sizes are available that waste is almost eliminated during the work of •erecting the Sheets. Again, so light is the weight of a Sheet, in relation to the area covered, that Durabestos imposes a minimum strain on the wall timbers, which may accordingly be of the smallest customary sections. Think too, of the ease of handling and fixing Durabestos. You can saw the Sheets .as readily as you do timber, and it is a simple matter to secure them in position. Just nail them to the wall studs, then cover the joints with cover strips, and the work is complete.

Working Plans Supplied : While we do not, ourselves, erect Durabestos structures, we are willing, if necessary, to provide a working drawing showing an effective set-out for Durabestos Walls or Ceilings.

Build to Suit Durabestos : See that your wall studs and ceiling joists are spaced at either 18 inch or aft. centres, so that full advantage may be secured from the use of Durabestos Sheets of stock sizes.

Durabestos Offers

New Possibilities

In Walls, Ceilings and Roofs.

IN every building—be it home, shed, factory, shop or store—there are places where Durabestos offers new and inviting possibilities. For Internal and F.xternal Walls, Partitions and Plain Ceilings, Durabestos Sheets are unquestionably supeiior to less modern materials. For a handsome, permanent Roofing Durabestos Shingles now deserve full recognition— offering you the desired effects at really low cost.

Such are the possibilities of Durabestos ; and if proof be required of the truth of our claims, ample evidence is available in the list of work for which Durabestos had been specified, and in the illustrations on this page of some of the completed work.

No doubt the treatments we picture will arouse a genuine desire to see similar effects re-produced in your own structure. Rest assured, however, that satisfactory results will be attained only if you insist on Durabestos the Wunderlich asbestos—cement. During the exclusive Wunderlich processif manufacture, Durabestos is subjected to hydraulic pressure, which imparts that density and finish for which the material is so noted. By accepting any substitute, you will forego these essential advantages which Durabestos offers.

Artistic, Inviting Home Interiors are Attained Readily with Durahestos.

WALLS and ceilings of Durabestos complete the artistic Home, adding to the attractiveness and comfort of the interior. To obtain the desired effects, Sheets approximately 3-i6ths of an inch thick should be utilised for the Interior Walls, and Sheets approximately 5~32nds of an inch thick for the Ceilings.

Many charming variations in Wall Treatment are obtained by employing wooden cover battens of suitable sizes, and panelling the Durabestos Walls into well proportioned areas. These cover battens may be plain or moulded,

In old and new homes alike, Durabestos Sheets will be found appropriate for Walls and Ceilings. These Sheets do not harbour vermin ; and the smooth, firm surface offers no encouragement for the lodgment of dust. Any handy man can fix the Sheets, without creating dirt or damage.

Durabestos Sheets are Available in Special Thicknesses, of Exceptional Strength.

CIRCUMSTANCES at times make it desirable to employ Durabestos of exceptional strength, and, consequently, of greater thickness than usual. Particularly is this so in the case of partitions. In such instances, as both sides of a partition are exposed to view, we find there is a demand for Sheets possessing two smooth surfaces, thus lending themselves to a high-class finish.

To meet this call for stouter Sheets, and two smooth faces, we are manufacturing Durabestos in four special thicknesss, viz., approx. J inch 5-i6ths of an inch ; 3-8th inch ; and 1 inch ; and we offer the following :—

Stocks and Delivery : Sheets | inch thick are available, for early delivery, in the stock size, viz., 8ft. by 4ft. All other thicknesses mentioned above can be supplied within six weeks from date of order. We will quote for special sizes on receipt of particulars. Early notice should be given us, to ensure satisfactory delivery.

For Roofing Purposes, we manufacture Durabestos Shingles, in four different sizes, all of which are illustrated above. These Shingles are of distinctive appearance, and well suited to the Australian climate, being weather-proof and extremely durable—actually improving and hardening in the weather. Like our Durabestos Sheets, the Shingles do not require the aid of paint to preserve their appearance or prevent decay. There are no exposed fastenings likely to corrode—the only visible fastenings are of copper.

Durabestos Shingles are made of the same materials as the Sheets, viz, asbestos fibre and Portland cement ; consequently, they are of the same pleasing grey colour, providing a welcome contrast to the sombre appearance of natural slate or the brilliance of Terra Cotta tiles.

To the country Homebuilder, in particular, our Durabestos Shingles have many points of appeal. They absorb very little rain water, and do not pollute the supply draining into the water tanks. Again, being poor conductors of heat and cold, they assist the maintenance of an even temperature in the Home, winter or summer. Being light in weight, they transport cheaply to remote districts. Fixed near the sea, they are highly effective as salt air does nor disintegrate them.

DURABESTOS SHINGLES are easily fixed, particularly as any cutting involved does not require expert knowledge. Below we provide details of the fixing of No. 3 Shingle (16 in. by 8 in.). On request, we will supply blueprints illustrating the method of fixing Shingles Nos. 2, 4, and 5. If the roof is less than one-third pitch, we advise close-boarding and felting in lieu of battening. The “crampon” mentioned is a copper disc, with pin attached. Materials per Square of Roofing : Clients desiring to order Shingles, and necessary fixing materials, for a roof of any size, will find the following information of service. Suggestion for a Seaside Cottage—with Durabestos Walls and Roofing.

THERE is no excuse for building your sea-side or week-end cottage of perishable or old fashioned materials, when Wunderlich Durabestos enables you to erect a comfortable, picturesque structure such as we illustrate above, in remarkably quick time, and at considerable saving in cost. Durabestos means economy in every way. If you are not disposed to paint the face of the Sheets you will find the natural bluish-grey colour intensely pleasing, while the surface will prove a perfect protection against the weather. Some materials deteriorate rapidly in a salt-laden atmosphere. Not so Durabestos, which is unaffected by the salt sea-air.

The Ground plan and general view of a Durabestos sea-side cottage, displayed on this page, will be of great service to anyone erecting such a building, as it has been specially designed to utilise Durabestos Building Sheets in an economical and befitting manner.

GROUND PLAN

Durabestos has come to the aid of the Homebuilder seeking a material that will improve with age, require very little expenditure for upkeep, yet always exhibit a presentable appearance. In country districts particularly, Durabestos Sheets have won favour, because they resist the spread of flames, and help to maintain a cool, even temperature in the Home on the warmest of days.

Equally suitable for country districts are our Durabestos Roofing Shingles or Terra Cotta Tiles. These materials are cooler than iron. They absorb very little rain water and do not pollute the supply draining into storage tanks.

The Method of Fixing Durabestos Sheets.

CLIENTS intending to build with Durabestos should study the list of sizes shown on page 4 of this Catalogue, as substantial savings will result from spacing studs at centres (say 18 inch or 24 inch) to suit the stock dimensions of our .Sheets.

Support behind joints. There must be support behind all edges of the Sheets, and behind all joints. Let in wooden cross pieces, if needed.

Cutting : No matter how carefully sizes are ordered, a certain amount of cutting is at times involved. When new, Durabestos can be sawn like timber A more general method is to place a batten along the direction of the cut. and, with a knife or old chisel, scratch a deep line to the desired length then snap off the surplus material.

Nailing : Durabestos is nailed in the same manner as timber, special blunt pointed nails being used. These nails should be driven at about 6 inches intervals, and should be at least 3-8ths of an inch from the edge of the sheet. We stock these nails (as illustrated) 1 inch by 14 gauge, in galvanised steel, and reckon on half a pound for each 100 square feet of Sheeting.

Jointing : The edges of Durabestos Sheets are simply butted against one another. Over this butt joint, it is usual to nail timber cover strips, ranging from 2 inches to 4 inches wide, and inch to 1 inch thick according to the effect desired.

Horizontal Joints : For horizontal joints, we make a Galvanized Drip Strip, which extends from the back of, and under the upper Durabestos Sheet, and laps down over the lower Sheet. Finally the Timber Horizontal Cover Batten is applied. As an alternative to the Drip Strip, a felt strip may be utilised.

Securing Cover Battens : Wooden Cover Battens may be nailed, but are best secured with screws
