Summary This paper examines performance appraisals in Australian universities. It identifies the political imperatives which drove the changes in higher education and saw the inculcation of managerial practices, one of which was performance appraisals, into academia. The paper then briefly examines the history of performance appraisals in Australian universities and identifies questions for further research.
