Summary This study investigated the 'out of body' or transcendent phenomenon many people experience when listening to music. Through this investigation, a theoretical frame of reference for understanding the transcendent experience was established enabling the development of a practice methodology for jazz-based improvising musicians to engage the transcendent experience at will.
