Summary This thesis traces the history of the debate over the theory of 'punctuated equilibria'. Which has been the focus of substantial and often heated debate in the evolutionary sciences. The history is analysed from the perspective of a 'struggle for authority', using the ideas of Bruno Latour and Pierre Bourdieu.
