This portfolio presents a critical account of two contemporary violin virtuosos’ performances in Melbourne, which took place in close proximity on the 7 February 2010 and 11 February 2010 respectively in Hamer Hall. The concerts “Tognetti & Mozart”, Richard Tognetti (violin) and Australian Chamber Orchestra, and “Bach + Ellington”, Nigel Kennedy (violin) and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, are endeavours of two violin virtuosos to create fresh concert programming using their arrangement skills. The two reviews are both eye-witness accounts of the performances and serious critical essays, discussing contemporary concert programming tendencies. The exquisitely curated programming of both Richard Tognetti and Nigel Kennedy combines carefully familiarity and innovation, education and entertainment to present a refreshing perspective of marginal classical repertoire in the case of “Tognetti & Mozart”, or to bring together familiar yet, unlikely repertoire (Baroque and big band music) in the case of “Bach + Ellington”. The reviews make a contribution to cultural understanding, reception studies and concert programming research.
