Summary This work represents the first systematic study on the properties and processing performance of Australian alpaca fibres. The resistance to compression behaviour of alpaca fibres was found to differ considerably from that of wool. A new technique has been developed to objectively measure the softness of fibres. The bleaching and dyeing behaviour of alpaca fibres has also been examined.
