Summary The conditions under which trust emerges as a governance mechanism in interorganisational networks was examined. The findings indicate that interorganisational trust is fostered when network members identify with common goals, when there is high interpersonal trust between key individuals in the networks, and when norms favouring reciprocity and cooperation develop.
