Summary This thesis covers historical, theoretical, and clinical grounds to re-examine historical and contemporary debates concerning sexual difference from a Lacanian psychoanalytic perspective. A new modality of the hysteric's ancient questioning of sexual identity has emerged from the clinic of transgender patients with crucial implications for our understanding of subjectivity today.
