Summary The thesis is a refinement of semiotic theory in architecture which aims towards developing a conversation between Western theory and the Eastern city. Using theoretical bases including semiotic theory, Japanese analytical text and analogies of cultural products, this thesis proposes that urban language can be perceived and analysed.
