Summary The "common jollytail", Galaxias maculatus, is a freshwater minnow-like fish that is distributed across the Southern Hemisphere and occurs abundantly in inland waterways of south-eastern Australia. Molecular genetic data were collected from samples of this species throughout western Victoria to evaluate hypotheses concerning the taxonomy and evolution of this ecologically important fish.
