Summary Outbreaks of Hendra virus in Queensland, during 1994-1999, resulted in the deaths of 17 horses and 2 humans from respiratory or neurological disease. Immunological, ultrastructural and expressional studies of the viral envelope proteins using recombinant poxviruses and DNA vectors contributed to improving our understanding of the biology of Hendra virus.
