Summary Novel protic ionic liquids (PILs) based on a tributyl phosphonium cation have been synthesised and characterised, revealing that the phosphonium based ILs show high thermal stability, high ionic conductivity and facile proton reduction compared to the corresponding ammonium based ILs.
