Summary Skeletal muscle mass is regulated by a balance between protein synthesis and protein degradation. Using molecular techniques, this PhD thesis identified that two proteins, PGC-1α and PGC-1β, can increase protein synthesis in myotubes in vitro. This has implications for the treatment of diseases associated with skeletal muscle atrophy.
