Notes
Lean was a sculpture/installation commissioned for the survey of New Zealand sculpture The Obstinate Object at Wellington’s City Art Gallery. Consisting of four seemingly identical inflatable units/sculptures, the audience were encouraged to lean against each one to activate what should be an identical experience of falling through into the void. However while appearing to be identical, the objects were inflated to differing degrees, meaning that the act of leaning on each one created a surprisingly different result. The work thus sought to challenge vision as our primary sensory mechanism highlighting the importance of haptic knowledge.
