Summary  Through behavioural experiments, I discovered that crimson rosellas could discriminate between species, subspecies and sexes based on odour alone. Chemical analysis revealed that plumage odour differed between subspecies, season, sex and age. Finally, I found that putative mammalian competitors and predators of the species could detect the plumage odour.
