Summary Civil port structures are usually located in a notoriously aggressive environment. The common approach in the past to maintenance has been to act when problems are visually displayed or when serviceability/structural capacity is affected. By this stage significant costs are likely to be incurred. Current Australian design codes do not explicitly address design for durability for the achievement of design life and this paper puts forward a pro-active approach towards maintenance either at the design stage or during the service life of an existing structure. Specific maintenance planning at Swanson Dock East is addressed in the paper.
