Summary  The system for selecting athletes in elite-level Australian sport was examined, through the eyes of a group of 21 volunteer and professional selectors. Their perceptions suggest that the system is improving, and becoming increasingly professional. System weaknesses are to a large extent counter-balanced by selectors’ high level of commitment.
