Summary  The findings of this case study research showed that the use of Indonesian folktales in English translation along with its illustrations for teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in two primary schools in Solo Indonesia seemed to be applicable in developing students’ EFL basic skills and students’ recognition of local cultural knowledge simultaneously.
