Series Trace Memory: After Decay
Description of artwork Located Act 7 is a photographic work and the final part of a research series visually exploring states of the in-between. This is situated within the practice of landscape photography in a post-colonial framework. Lights on the hill in the distance perform as anchors in the scene that has been repeated 7 ways. In Act 7, the final act of the Located series, the narrative arrives at a three plane vision, the fore, middle and backgrounds work in angles resting on top of one another, as if a sleeping body lies, quiet ever in the night. What was hinted as dawn, is most apparent in this act, this narrative which now seems so real, yet is layered over the experiences of Acts 1-6. It is almost as if you can hear the movement of the body’s in the houses far beyond, as memories are started, dreams are fading and days beginning...is this still a dream?...or a place far beyond? The size of the work as a large unframed print on canvas, actively seeks a physical engagement with the audience via a centrality of vision. The artwork hangs a metre out from the wall and the work sways in the breeze, to ensure the audience is located at a site for the production of meaning and this captures a mixed reality, between artwork, vision, audience and experience. This is achieved to engage with the multi-sequential narratives surrounding perception and memories visually and theoretically traversed throughout the series. This is part of the ongoing exploration of states of the in-between and is the end of a series of 7 artworks. The work is exhibited in the Yarra Ranges, because the work explores the narrative of the decay of memory experienced in this location. Exhibiting here allows a cyclic dialogue with notions of place, home, longing and loss.
