Summary The marketisation of higher education (HE) has created a number oftensions and ideological dilemmas that may influence howacademics see their roles and teaching practices. This paperexplores how academics in the discipline of social work (who werealso in leadership roles) perceive their roles and identities andmanage the tensions and dilemmas that arise for them as teachersin the current HE environment. Unless the tensions and dilemmasare articulated, it is not possible to understand and manage theirimpact on academics. This may lead to the loss of quality learningexperiences for students and lower workplace satisfaction. Thispaper addresses the research question: were there ideologicaldilemmas experienced by social work academics in the currentenvironment and if so, what subject positions did they adopt inresponse to these? A discursive psychology approach was used toanswer this question. Data showed a range of ideologicaldilemmas represented by each of the different subject positionsadopted. The paper concludes with questions for readers toconsider, generating ideas for transferring understanding of theseideological dilemmas into positive action within the workplace.
