Summary This grounded theory study gives voice to the lived experiences of 12 independent school principals. Key findings concern the need for clarity of purpose and the significant role of a school as a community of learners/practice. Issues of accountability and whether appraisal processes significantly contribute to student learning outcomes are highlighted.
