Summary  The study answered questions about psychoanalysis and reader-response theory in contemporary American fiction. It modelled empirical and hypothetical readers in the works of David Foster Wallace, and challenged assumptions about psychoanalysis in Wallace’s critical reception. The findings point to new and strange ways of understanding the ‘author-reader relationship’ in fiction.
