Summary Through creative practice and empirical study this research examines the link between modernist writing techniques and deep reading. It found that complex characters and structures, as well as passages of untagged dialogue, activate deep reading. This has applications for writers and literacy specialists as they seek to develop deep reading skills in adolescents.
