Summary The main aim for this doctoral thesis was to gain a perspective on women’s experience of ageing, and to understand how media messages and peer influences shape attitudes towards ageing and appearance. A primary focus for this research was to explore the complex issues surrounding the ageing process and how Australian women, young and old, experience their changing physical appearance as they progress through the life course.
