Summary Responding to the local landscapes around Box Hill, Gardiners Creek, and the surrounding suburbs, this body of work is in part a reframing of the area’s historical connection to the Australian impressionists. The forensic element that runs through much of the work revisits a popular trope in Australian landscape painting and literature of the late 19th century: the lost subject in the Australian bush —as epitomised by McCubbin’s Lost (1886). In searching for the lost subject —or at least its trace—the forensic presence activates certain fundamental tensions at play in the landscape idea: tensions between the objective and the subjective; between dwelling and distanciated viewing; between separation and diffusion; between self and non-self, and between the fragment and the whole. More fundamentally then, this body of work is part of an ongoing investigation into the construction of the relationship between self and world and the ways in which the tradition of landscape speaks to this relationship.
