Summary What is the relationship between landscape and consciousness? We tend to differentiate land from the idea of landscape by invoking in the latter the presence of an intervening subject (or non-subject, or anti-subject). The conception of subjectivity and the sense of self, has been reshaped and rewritten in numerous ways within landscape discourse. Shifting intellectual currents have formulated and reformulated consciousness variously as: metaphysically immanent, false, discursive, displaced, de-centred, distributed and dispersed.
