Research statement

Background This was a jointly funded project between Defence Science Technology Organisation and the University of South Australia, to conduct a sweeping, systematic literature review on countering violent extremism (CVE) and countering terrorism across the human and social sciences and humanities, to map the state of current knowledge and any weaknesses or gaps in the literature. Contribution This was the first major literature review of CVE and countering terrorism in Australia. It demonstrated that, although there was an explosion of research around terrorism in the immediate preceding period, there were significant contradictions in findings, lack of empirical support for different models, and a fractured research landscape that needed better communication and sharing of data (among other findings/recommendations). Significance This was the first major literature review of countering violent extremism research conducted in Australia for the Attorney General's Department in conjunction with the Defence Science Technology Organisation. It has directly and indirectly shaped policy and research debate since then and continues to be cited.
