First published in hard copy in the year 2013, 40 years after Andrew left Tasmania as a 10 year-old, and written as he approached his 50th birthday, this short book is now published and made available fully here online in 2023 which is the year Andrew turns 60. This memoir when launched at Deakin University's CBD premises by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) Professor Lee Astheimer, and Pro Vice Chancellor (Arts and Education) Brenda Cherednichenko, was described as an accomplished memoir which evokes the history of many people's experiences of growing up in Australia in the 1960s and 1970s. In celebrating memories of Hobart and its nurturing, spiritual heart, the Derwent River the book contributes to discussions of the importance of place, of local areas in determining people’s identities and attachments; dilemmas of population decline, and environment versus development, as shown by the experience of Tasmania; the considerable affection which members of the large Tasmanian diaspora have for their home state; and the problems of continuing concentration of Australia’s population growth in existing very large cities like Melbourne and Sydney. This book continues the contributions to ‘memoir as history’ made by other academics from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences previously.Publication classification
