One of the first generation of women medical students to graduate from Melbourne University, Mary De Garis (1881-1963) was a pioneering doctor in the early 20th century. She worked in the outback before serving with the Scottish Women's Hospitals in Northern Macedonia in World War One. Arriving in Geelong in 1919 she modernised the maternity services for women with an outstanding record for research and practice prior to the advent of antibiotics.
