Abstract
In the United Kingdom, the “non-formal learning sector” refers to a raft of organizations that offer young people, frequently from low-income families, opportunities to participate, learn about, and possibly be trained in a range of performing and creative arts. This chapter presents an anatomy of an organization to give some sense of the uniqueness of YouthSites. It then provides a brief overview of the size and scope of “the sector,” including a sense of how these organizations contribute to the notion of a discrete “field” of action. It also prefigures some of the debate about what it means to talk about these organizations working as a sector in the service of youth transitions.
