A research agenda for emotions in the management of sport organisations
Individuals experience an array of different emotions in sport settings. This chapter presents an overview of research pertaining to emotions in sport organisations. It critically reflects on existing research on emotions in sport which largely focused on the psychological factors associated with individual emotion regulation. To advance the current knowledge, this chapter draws on a theoretical multilevel framework of emotion including five levels of analysis: within person, between persons, dyadic interactions, leadership and teams, and organisation-wide. Specific topics discussed in the scope of senior manager roles in managing emotions in sport organisations include affective events theory, emotional intelligence, emotional labour, emotional contagion, leadership, and emotional climate. Following a long period of neglect, this chapter indicates future research directions for the study of emotions in sport management.
