Chinese intellectuals facing the challenges of the new century

Democratization, marketization, professionalism and globalization challenge the traditional pattern of the Chinese intellectual and raise the following challenging questions. Are the Chinese ideas of the intellectual incompatible with the idea of democracy? How can the Chinese traditional idea of the intellectual, especially the Confucian critical tradition, survive in an increasingly commercial and professional society?
