In societies like Australia people experience unequal access to resources based on age, race, gender and socio-economic status, which means that many people can experience ongoing disadvantage. For example, while the majority of South Sudanese people coming to Australia have adapted to life in Australia since their resettlement and are thriving members of Australian society, a small number of Sudanese Australians however struggle. Some of them find themselves in contact with law enforcement agencies and as such, young South Sudanese people are overrepresented in the criminal justice system in Victoria. This chapter touches on the impact sensationalised media representations can have on community wellbeing, how multicultural societies can support community members experiencing disadvantage, and the role of youth led community research.
