Neoliberalism is, since the late 1980s the most influential ideology as far as education in developed countries is concerned. However, in the last few years a new ‘ideology’ has emerged, in competition to neoliberalism, namely populism and especially nationalist populism. This is evidenced by the election results in the USA and the rise of conservative national-populist parties, for example, in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Greece. These political movements are opposing the forces of economic globalization and the effects it has on the social structures including education. This contribution aims to contrast the neoliberal ideology with the nationalist-populist politics. As the point of departure for this juxtaposition the neoliberal education agenda will be analysed by revisiting its contemporary critiques. In conclusion, this contribution will provide a speculative discussion concerning the rise of a nationalist-populist education agenda.
