Formation of the operational deployment force
The 1976 and 1987 Defence White Papers forecast the strategic requirement for Australia to have a short-notice deployable combat arms formation. 3rd Brigade, based in Townsville, became Australia's frontline land force under the direction of Lieutenant General Donald Dunstan.
