In Search of Sport Management

The purpose of this chapter is to continue the search for meaning as it relates to sport management. In the quest for clarity, the chapter interrogates the meaning of sport and, in particular, sport as a product to better understand the bodies of knowledge that inform sport management. It also explores various contexts in which sport exists and argues that understanding context assists in identifying the special features of sport. The chapter also highlights how an understanding of sport’s special features provides research direction in shaping theory testing and development to better understand and manage the sport experience. In this quest for meaning, a definition of sport management is offered to stimulate debate and assist future research directions.
