Marconi's legacy: learning through radio in digital classrooms

chapter
posted on 2007-01-01, 00:00 authored by Sharon Pittaway
December 2001 marked the centenary of Marconi's successful experiment to send a radio signal across the Atlantic. Wireless technology was born, and a new era of mass communication began. This chapter outlines a module run within a teacher education context that specifically introduces pre-service teachers to teaching and learning through radio. Learning about radio -allowing students to have air-time, and training them in the use of studio equipment and the basics of communication -is important for skill and confidence development, but learning through radio has the benefit of engaging students, in a practical, hands-on way, in real-world learning. Some issues surrounding the application of this technology in pre-service teacher training are presented in this chapter.
