Effective delivery of drugs to organs restricted from the circulatory systems is a major challenge faced in drug development. Treating rheumatic diseases affecting joints that are avascular and aneural uses intra-articular therapy leading to increased patient discomfort and non-compliance. Functionalized nanoparticles using various drug delivery nano-platforms have the prospective to revolutionize treatment and analysis of diseases by utilizing targeted delivery techniques and ensuring prolonged drug sustainability. Here we explore the recent surfacing of novel drug developments for arthritic diseases, in particularly nanotechnology based targeted drug delivery platforms and their efficacy against diseases progression. The alternative strategy of integrating natural molecules with nanotechnology to target rheumatic diseases may open up innovative pathways for the development of successful therapeutics.
