Criminologists are often divided about the appropriate definitions of crime and their applications to certain types of behaviour or classes of people. In fact, the term "crime" is often "taken-for-granted" and poorly defined in historical and contemporary criminological research. The failure to define this core term has produced considerable debate over whether some behaviours are or should be defined as criminal.
