Abstract Throughout this book, a strong focus is placed on highlighting future directions in work design research. This chapter draws together key recurring themes on this topic, focusing on six in particular: (1) expanding the scope of work design, (2) re-examining and broadening the outcomes of work design, (3) work design in an era of artificial intelligence, (4) work design for diversity and inclusion, (5) proactive employees who craft their jobs, and (6) leaders as work designers. Within each theme, key opportunities and challenges for future research are discussed. We hope that our discussion of these themes stimulates research and discourse which positively transforms work design for workers everywhere.
