Research statement

This text examines the recent art practice of Australian artist David Thomas. It specifically examines the assorted ways in which the artist interrogates the liminal spaces between figuration and abstraction and how the practice extends beyond formalism to examine everyday life and in particular chance as a generative mechanism for making art. This essay also examines the role of humour as both a strategy and modality that points towards a unique alignment of non-representational art and the absurd. In seeking to extend understandings of Thomas' practice beyond formal readings to examine the role of time and performance in supposedly static art objects, the text offers new knowledge as to the method and approach of a key figure in contemporary Australian Art. The text is published in the book Moving Times publishers by BlockProjects Gallery in Melbourne.
