Research statement

Background Scholarly research in the Anthropocene intersects with museological practice at the point of exhibition creation, in this way research for exhibitions and production of exhibition catalogues are an important platform for research outputs. This research is at the nexus of curatorial practice and historical research. This multi-year international collaboration questions: How does the Wardian case become reinterpreted in the museum, gallery and contemporary art context? How do we find new audiences for historical research with the museum as platform? Continuing the research means contributing to non-traditional research outputs such as museum catalogues. Contribution This research appeared in the exhibition “Garden Futures, Designing with Nature” which was shown at Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rein Germany (25.3.23 to 3.10.23), and will be staged in late 2024 at the Nieuwe Institut, Rotterdam, Netherlands (16.11.24 to 13.4.25) and resulted in the catalogue contribution that was published by Vitra Design Museum in 2023. This multi-year collaboration involved research and advice for the exhibition and contribution to the catalogue. The exhibition and book reached international audiences with the new narratives from the history of science and global garden histories. Significance The Vitra Design museum is of international standing as the leading design museum in the world. For curators, collaboration and research with Vitra is highly regarded in the field of research and practice. By discussing the global horticulture trade and the movement of plants for gardens, the research through both the exhibition contribution and the catalogue contribution reinvigorates discussion of global garden histories. The research significance of this work was further recognised in scholarly community through the scholarly book chapter published with Springer Nature, “Moving Plants in the Victorian Era” (Springer Nature, 2025).
