Notes

Recasting the relationship between the body and painting, Mantle/Mantel explores how material elements such as garment, sculpture, wall and lighting are implicated in the realisation of an artwork. Geometric shapes in the painting are reiterated in the surfaces of the garment, cast shadows and shelf: coalescing as a total composition. The resulting assemblage of surfaces elaborate Eckersley’s ongoing interest in the human subject implied in encounters with art. This installation work included a poem by Antonia Pont titled 'Milk River', commissioned for use by Eckersley for the exhibition in advance.

Research statement

This commissioned work is a homage to the paintings of Agnes Martin, an influence on both Eckerlsey and Pont, and leading to the confluence of the use of poetry in this installation exhibition. The ekphrastic work explores Martin's use of fine lines, gradations of colour and repetition, dovetailing with Pont's preoccupation with quietness, monochromatic spectra expressed in textual form and traditional research fields of time and Repetition in Gilles Deleuze.
