Research statement
Background
This book presents the diverse perspectives of people assisting their gender diverse or transitioning family member. This book offers insight into the experiences of those who play a supportive role including grandparents, partners, parents, friends, children or siblings. The central focus of this book is on the various stages of transitioning and each contribution takes a standpoint from a very personal perspective, at a particular moment in time, usually towards the beginning of the journey. It is a valuable resource for family members who may be challenged by the changes in their family dynamic.
Contribution
-I am a member of TransFamily and have designed, typeset, co-ordinated, edited and contributed an anonymous chapter to the book. The book is designed with a unique communication strategy to identify the relationship of each author and their trans and gender diverse family member. Careful consideration was required to co-ordinate the writing of numerous contributors who had limited writing experience.
Significance
-This NTRO provides a rich resource of original content that can be drawn on to contribute to the traditional research of gender studies. This is an original and substantial contribution to the gender discourse, coming from the unique standpoint of those who support trans and gender diverse people and not from the position of the trans and gender diverse person themselves. There is no other book like this currently available, and more specifically coming from an Australian context. This book took two years from concept to completion and builds on Volume one outcomes with the stories of families now further down the journey.
