Research statement
Background
850 wd critical survey of design in Melbourne Now - National Gallery of Victoria 2023 exploring ‘design research as a systematic enquiry whose goal is knowledge of, or in, the embodiment of configuration, composition, structure, purpose, value and meaning in man made things and systems’ (Archer, 1981). Commissioned by NGV the piece tackles these porous borders to render design as central to the fabric of Melbourne. This is explored against the backdrop of Žižeks’ Desert of the Real’ and Baudrillard’s ‘Simulacra and Simulation’ whereby on a basic level society has been replaced by symbols and signs or the human experience of a simulation of reality.
Contribution
The piece contributes novel ideas and a fresh voice to the Australian landscape of critical design writing where ‘design may be configured as a question, a statement or a provocation’ extending what Cross (2001) states is a ‘designerly way of knowing’. In its current form this landscape is limited, yet it is anticipated this contributes as both a new thread and a driver of knowledge that draws on key theorists and adds to the visibility of design writing in Australia.
Significance
The ambitious 2023 exhibition of Melbourne Now follows the inaugural 2013 survey. This NTRO is a significant addition to the survey, produced as a broadsheet and distributed around Australia. The exhibition of design artefacts is a burgeoning area identified by the NGV and this work contributes to this dialogue. Design criticism in Australia is a fledgling area and as such this contribution adds to this emerging field.
