This paper highlights the importance of assessing individual students' performance when working in groups. It discusses some methods to differentiate individual performance and grade when a student works as a part of a team. Three different case studies are presented, i.e., assessment of individual student performance when working in a group to do a laboratory practice, or a mini-project or a final-year (capstone) project. The presented case studies contribute to the subject giving concrete examples on how to apply the reviewed theory in three different types of group work. The effect of evaluating individual performance in addition to the group assessment on students learning is discussed.
