Corrosion resistance of nanobainitic steel

Bainitic steels with a nanometric bainite grain size (nanobainitic steels) are becoming increasingly popular for defence and petroleum applications because of their excellent combination of strength and ductility (i.e., their excellent toughness). This paper presents results of a corrosion study on the nanobainitic steels in 0.6M NaCl, 0.1M NaOH and 0.1M H 2 SO 4 . To understand the role of nanobainitic structures on corrosion resistance, nanobainitic steel has been compared with another steel of the same composition but different structure (a martensitic steel). Irrespective of their structure (nanobainitic or martensitic), the steels have shown insignificant variations in their corrosion resistance in the tests solutions used, which has led to the conclusion that either the nanobainitic structure has little influence on corrosion resistance or the tests solutions used were too aggressive to ascertain the effect of the steel structure on corrosion resistance.
