Development of a microfluidic device for combined RNA extraction and realtime, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction

The work presented here describes the development of a single integrated microfluidic device for RNA extraction using silica-based monoliths and the amplification of mRNA using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR). PCR products are detected in real-time using PicoGreen™, a fluorescent dye that intercalates into double stranded (ds) DNA that can be quantified using a laserbased detection system.
