ERA TARGETS AGAINST DIFFERENT THREATS: NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS

The design of explosive reactive armour (ERA) is challenging because of its complexity. In this work we investigated some generic ERA configurations against SCJ and APFSDS threats with different numerical approaches, in particular FEM and γ-SPH with the state of the art code implemented in IMPETUS®. The residual depth of penetration in a witness block is evaluated and used as a measure of the performance of the different ERA configuration. Nevertheless, as the focus here is set on the detailed interaction between the ERA and the threat, especially for the validation of the numerical simulation, flash x-ray techniques are also applied in order to visualize the state of the threat at different stages. Instead of multi-exposed x-ray images in the experiments for this work, we applied the X-ray cinematography technique to our tests.
