Improving the carburising resistance of bulk and welded inconel 600

conference contribution

This study has demonstrated the efficacy of a FBR-CVD aluminising surface treatment on welded and bulk sections of Inconel 600 in resisting prolonged high-temperature carburisation. Quantitative depth profiling (GDOES) and microstructural analysis were used to confirm the complete prevention of carbon diffusion into the aluminised samples and to study changes to the aluminide layer as a result of carburising. Three-point bend testing showed that mechanical properties were retained in the surface treated material compared to sudden brittle inter-weld fracture in the untreated samples.
